According to archeologist’s, it is believed that the Mesopotamians may have been the premier fans of crystal in the 16th century BC. Other civilizations, such as the Greeks and Romans, followed by creating artistic designs made out of glass.

In1676, Englishman George Ravenscroft experimented with lead oxide by mixing silica sand and ultimate created lead crystal as it is known today.

The well-to-do of that period deemed their personal belongings were vital components to the elements of life. Crystal had a part of all four elements of ‘Earth, fire, wind and water.’ Crystal was a luxury and a necessity that only they could afford.

The 20th century became the century in which the most common basis of owning crystal was geared from weddings and anniversaries gifts. Crystal seemed almost compulsory to be on every gift registry. However, besides being used for vases and stemware, crystal also became decorative art.

For 109 years, Steuben glass has represented the epitome of American crystal through its artisans and craftsmen. Although no longer in operation, Steuben glass was known for their designs from the Eiffel Tower to Moby Dick engraved on a piece of crystal. Their flagship store on Fifth Ave. was a walk in museum.

Today several pieces are part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and any of their pieces are highly collectable and increasing in value.
