Valentine’s Day is almost here and with it come the traditional bouquet of flowers and the prerequisite heart shaped box of chocolates.
The story behind chocolate is an interesting one indeed. Chocolate originated in South America where it was considered to be extremely valuable; the Aztecs even used it as a currency and it was only served as a beverage for the wealthy, which showed off their enormous wealth by drinking it.
The cocoa bean first appeared in Europe by Columbus, where it instantly became a popular item of medicinal purposes. It was applied to the skin as a medicine by French doctors.
In the 1800s, the Cadbury Brothers, who lived in Britain, came up with the idea of packaging chocolates to sell them to a large audience. Around 1861, the brothers came up with the marketing idea of putting chocolates in special boxes shaped like hearts. The idea became an instant success, not only making them wealthy but in turn spurring off the commercialization of Valentine’s Day and creating a centuries long holiday institution.
Milton Hershey’s Lancaster Caramel Company didn’t indulge in this treat until 1894. The company started producing baking chocolate, cocoa and sweet chocolate after viewing Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Candies were not on the horizon until 1895 and the Hershey Chocolate Company was formed and their famed ‘kiss’ arrived soon after.
