As seen on the recent runway shows, polka dots are very much in. Louis Vuitton has never been one, under the supervision of Marc Jacobs to shy away from the prevailing art scene. First there was Stephen Sprouse who placed graffiti on the Speedy. Then came along Takashi Murakami and gave a new image to Vuitton bags by applying a 'Candy Land' cartoon sensibility to the Vuitton classic.

One avant-garde artist recently snagged by Louis Vuitton is 83 year-old artist Yayoi Kusama. She is best known for her way of dancing the polka around dots in her version of pop art.

Some of Yayoi Kusama’s major works sit at the MOMA in NYC and the Tate in London. Christies New York sold a work by the ‘Princess of Polka Dots’ for $5.1 million in 2008, making it a record for a living female artist.

Now in collaboration with Marc Jacobs of Louis Vuitton, the buzz words are that an everlasting hit is hitting the scene. A number of key items resulted in a collection of polka-dotted accessories and frocks.

Marc Jacobs owns an extensive art collection and as a fan of Kusama he first met her in Japan in 2006. While visiting her Tokyo studio and he relished in the vibrantly colored paintings. They joined forces and reproduced the vivid and repetitively polka dots that will be hail as a Kusama/Vuitton hit.
