The original No 19 fragrance was created by Henri Robert in 1971 exclusively for Coco Chanel. She was in her eighties at the time and the number was chosen based on her birth date, August 19th.
The Chanel Corporation has planted its own iris fields in Grasse on the French Riviera, alongside those filled with rose and jasmine, and reserved for all of their perfumes.
